Spanning the breadth of New Zealand aviation-from balloons and biplanes to Boeing 767s, from ‘home-builts’ to helicopters, military operations to microlights-It serves as both a general introduction to New Zealand aviation and as a reference text, and is the only complete history available of New Zealand’s civil and military aviation.
It begins as far back as the 1860s including Richard Pearse, the Walsh brothers and the unsung heroes of aviation ‘down under’, including American Arthur Stone and New Zealander Joe Hammond.
The Great Airship Mystery of 1909, Kiwis in the Royal Flying Corps, the barnstorming era of the early 1920s are covered, as are the modest beginnings of military aviation at Wigram-soon to grow into the RNZAF. The beginning of the aero club movement in 1928, the expansion of aviation of the 1930s, and the beginnings of modern airline travel in the mid 1930s, are recorded.
World War Two is covered in detail, not only the wide- ranging contribution that New Zealanders made overseas in the Pacific, over England, Europe, Burma and Africa, but also the decision-making and organisation on the home front. The exploits of New Zealanders in the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm, and in the many squadrons and servicing units in the Pacific, are described. New Zealand’s aviation Victoria Cross winners are remembered.
The post-war development of the numerous large and small airlines The origins of the National Airways Corporation, its saga and eventual merger with Air New Zealand are recorded, in company with the history of the freight airline SAFE Air.
Mount Cook Airlines-the ‘back-blocks airline that came to town’- is traced through its growth as a tourist airline, a success story contrasting with the fates of such other enterprises as SPANZ, Nationwide Air, Skybus and a host of smaller, third-level airlines.
The actions, or lack of them, of successive Governments are examined, from the first aviation legislation in 1918 to the ‘deregulation’ of the 1980s.
