Description
'My War and Peace' is an autobiography covering a period of ten years from 1939 to 1949. It begins with the author’s almost miraculous survival after traveling from Warsaw, through Germany to France, just as the German invasion of Poland was about to take place. Alec Goldsmith had intended to start work as a junior lecturer at the University of Grenoble in France, but those plans had to be abandoned. Instead he saw service in both the French and British armies, before training to fly with the RAF. When Allied forces launched their D-Day assault, he crossed the Channel to join the invasion force as an air traffic controller. 'My War and Peace' offers a fascinating insight into how one man survived a major war through both dangerous and amusing incidents. It is a tale that will entertain readers of all ages.
Immigrating with his family to New Zealand in 1961, he became head of languages at Tauranga Girls' College, teaching French. Retiring in 1976
