It begins with the author’s almost miraculous survival after traveling from Warsaw, through Germany to France, just as the German invasion of Poland was about to take place. Alec Goldsmith had intended to start work as a junior lecturer at the University of Grenoble in France, but those plans had to be abandoned. Instead he saw service in both the French and British armies, before training to fly with the RAF. When Allied forces launched their D-Day assault, he crossed the Channel to join the invasion force as an air traffic controller.
