Weighing in at 332g the pair plus 76g for the cleats, the Miche MT4s aren’t the lightest pedals around but they’re built to last and they work great.

The MT4s are made up of a varnished alloy body that spins on a steel axle. Clipping in is very straightforward – you just press down as usual and the pivoting fastening plate, which is controlled by two internal coil springs, snaps reassuringly onto the cleat so you’re never in any doubt as to whether it has engaged. Unclipping is just as obvious, and you can adjust the release mechanism by turning an Allen bolt at the rear – it couldn’t be easier.

The large platform spreads the pressure well to minimise the chances of getting hotspots on your feet as you pedal and the bearings, which were smooth out of the box, have stayed that way over several hundred miles. When the time comes for giving them some TLC, you just take a bolt out of the pedal body and squeeze some liquid lube in – it goes straight through to the bearings. You also get spare plastic body and side plates; they’ll attach easily if and when the original ones need replacing.

The cleats, which use a Look 3-bolt pattern, put up with unavoidable walking reasonably well – no complaints there. The yellow ones that come in the box don’t have any float but you can get replacement red cleats with 5-degrees of movement before you unclip if you prefer.
