Air New Zealand is New Zealand's national flag carrier and a member of the world's largest airline alliance, Star Alliance. Air New Zealand began as TEAL (Tasman Empire Airways Limited) in 1940, operating Short Empire flying boats on trans-Tasman routes. In 1978, the domestic National Airways Corporation (NAC) and its subsidiary Safe Air were merged into TEAL to form Air New Zealand.
The 737 first entered service in 1968, and 25 years after the announcement of its first sale, it became the most ordered and produced commercial passenger jet in history. Air New Zealand operates 17 of Boeing's 737-300 series aircraft on domestic and Pacific routes. Air New Zealand took delivery of Boeing's last 737-300 delivery at the end of 1999. Recent deliveries of Air New Zealand 737-300s have been retired from other airlines, such as Air Malta.
The 737 is now available in a number of versions, from the -200 to the most recent addition, the -900ER. The 737-300 typically seats 120-130 passengers in a two-class configuration, but Air New Zealand seats 136 in a single class, squeezing in an extra row when compared to the typical Qantas single-class configuration.
Many airlines are phasing out the 737 "Classic" in favour of the 737 "Next Generation" series (-600 to -900ER). The 900ER seats up to 180 passengers in a 2-class configuration, effectively replacing Boeing's 757-200 series aircraft now out of production. The -900ER has a range of 3,200 nautical miles (5,925 km).
