About the 2020 Communications Trust The 2020 Communications Trust is a registered charitable trust established in 1996. The Trust runs a number of initiatives that focus on empowering people to use ICT as a pathway to engage more fully in their communities, their countries and in today's global village. Two flagship programmes are Computers in Homes and eDay. The proceeds from these auctions will contribute towards running these not-for-profit initiatives. What is Computers in Homes? Computers in Homes Rorohiko I roto nga Kainga is a programme that brings computer technology within reach of all New Zealand families with school aged children. The programme provides families in low-income communities with computers and the internet, but more importantly, training, skills and support through their local school. With the skills and confidence to use technology, parents are able to connect with their children’s learning. As a result, Computers in Homes has seen strengthened relationships between family and school, improved educational outcomes for children, and greater opportunities for their parents. Computers in Homes has already helped to create opportunities for more than 4,000 families, with around 100,000 more waiting to be connected. Visit www.computersinhomes.org.nz for more information. What is eDay? Electronic waste (e-waste) can seriously harm the environment, wildlife and human health when dumped in landfills. eDay is a cars-only drive-through recycling event which gives you the opportunity to recycle old computers or mobile phones in an environmentally sustainable way. Since eDay's inception in 2007, approximately 39,900 cars have dropped off 196,000 items of computer and computer-related waste for safe recycling, diverting 2,337 tonnes of e-waste from landfills. eDay 2010 is on Saturday 6 November. Please visit www.eday.org.nz for more information. |
