A weird tale of the unnatural An innocent drag race results in tragedy for Mary Henry (Candace Hillgoss) when the car she is in hurtles over a bridge into the river below. All the occupants are presumed dead until a solitary survivor, Mary, astonishingly emerges with no recollection of how she escaped the crash. Once recovered, Mary accepts a job in a new town as a church organist, whilst driving to her new job she is hounded by unsettling visons of a mysterious figure. Furthermore, she appears to be strangely drawn to an abandoned carnival on a barren stretch of road outside her new destination. Ultimately, it is at the carnival that Mary must confront the personal demons of her spiritual indifference. Director Herk Harvey only made one feature film and it is to his credit that although sometimes pretentious, Carnival of Souls is a stylish rare cult film that truly warrants its reputation.
