Of Human Bondage (1934), from W. Somerset Maugham's novel and directed by John Cromwell, stars Bette Davis (as the slut Mildred) and Leslie Howard. Abandoning artistic ambitions, sensitive Philip Carey enrols in medical school and falls in love with illiterate waitress Mildred Rogers. She rejects him, runs off with a salesman and returns unmarried and pregnant.
