I started this lawnmowing business a few months ago after retiring from my previous company, intending it to be a light side venture to stay active. Since then, other opportunities have come along and I no longer have the time to grow it further — which is unfortunate, because the foundations are strong and the marketing has exceeded expectations.

The business was designed from day one to generate enquiries. A local flyer campaign has been extremely effective, delivering customers at around six times the rate I expected. From just 2,000 flyers, I gained 10 regular customers, plus another four simply from people seeing the branded van while I was working.

The branding and marketing are targeted primarily to Auckland’s western districts, where the business name resonates well, but the same approach would translate easily elsewhere. The strategy is simple: focus on phone enquiries rather than relying solely on a website. A visible, branded van builds trust, reinforces familiarity, and encourages neighbours to call — helping you naturally build efficient, local routes.

I originally planned to grow the business to around 40 regular customers, so I printed 50,000 flyers. Customers came on faster than expected, so I paused distribution while building fitness. As a result, approximately 48,000 quality postcard flyers remain unused, ready for the next owner to scale quickly.

The business currently operates just a few hours per week (Tuesday and Wednesday mornings). I will continue servicing existing customers until handover. Each lawn averages $58.
