About Melody

Kia ora!

I’m Melody and I have one of the best jobs on the planet; hunting down old school toys and reconnecting them with a new owner. There is nothing cooler than sharing in the joy and nostalgia that a childhood relic evokes.

My past is in corporate and government contracting mahi (work) and while challenging and rewarding, it was also high pressure and demanding. In May of 2024 I took the plunge and launched Melody Likes, a venture borne from the cherished memories of the toys woven throughout a childhood shared with my younger brother.

My brother and I were a tag team and as children we snuck out of bed at 5am, slipped on our favourite ‘Peter Pan’ LP and sung and danced around the lounge together. My brother taught me how to rebody G.I Joe figures and we would spend hours giving them makeovers. We begged our parents to hire gaming consoles and played Alex the Kidd and Mario Bros until our eyes went square.

I loved Barbie, Jem, and Stormer from the Misfits and would sew them dolls clothes and drive them around in my shoes imagining they were Rockin’ Roadsters. I had a light up Globug plush that I slept with at night and cut n sew Strawberry Shortcake pillows, and my first watch was a magical iridescent Watchimal snail that engulfed my wrist. I owned one My Little Pony named Moonstone with her rainbow mane and glittery body stamp and longed for a Care Bear, then finally bought a handmade one from the Aberdeen School gala made of felt and loved it to death.

Playing marbles and elastics was part of school life, and I traded Garbage Pail Kids, GI Joe and Batman cards with other kids. We watched Fraggle Rock, Transformers, He-Man and kiwi classics like WhatNow and Playskool in the morning or after school, then at night Mum or Dad would read us a story from The Faraway Tree or a tale from Richard Scarry.

I recall a wholesome upbringing and childhood full of wonder, curiosity, magic and lots of hugs from a family that loved me. That is what Melody Likes is all about, recapturing and bringing those memories to life for not just me, but for everyone.
