"Roofliss" the Toyota Townace Interisland Van

We've just crossed Cook Strait in this van and we're onto the next mean as project. You won't get much cooler than this sweet deal. Two litre, big turbo, 85 raging horsepower from factory and the ability to cruise round the Viaduct pickin up skanks. This van is so rad, it once got a girl pregnant just from looking at it.

The front wheels drive it on land while the prop drives it at a break-neck 5 knots in the water (where it'll be the only van you can't get done D.I.C in). Still has heaps of tread left on the tyres. Good for slimy boatramps.

Has onboard 240v supply. Massive sunroof, waterproof, bilge pump, great sound system with positionable speakers on real long cables. Great towing capacity, probably up to a three ton floating caravan. Not quite able to waterski behind it though. Good for a spot of fishing. Marlins practically jump onboard, with the groupies.

It's real stable on the water and handles like a dream. May need a new prop after a small incident while motoring 8 miles off Mana Island. Still goes fine though.

Will swap for all sorts of stuff except Sealegs (which aren't proper amphibious cars really are they? Just an expensive dinghy.) (or a Gibbs Aquada although they'd look better with a super sick bodykit and a big bore) Won't swap for any DX wagons on chromes.

The van's currently in Auckland, and will be doing the rounds.

Will be sold with a few litres of Diesel, my flash Pioneer amp, maybe a few Tuis and some gas. Come's with a floating keyring. Woohoo! Whoever buys it will be taken out for a quick lesson on the handling characteristics of Vanboating.

Thanks to our sponsors Lees Boatbuilders, Greenacres, Tui, Le Cafe and to Ted Church from the marine brokers in Picton. Cheers also to Jimma Dylan and his mate who lent us their boats for support. There's others that helped us out.

Rotary, Drift, Vanboat, Boatvan, RB26DETT, Cook Strait, Deckchair, WRX, BBQ

I'll have to go back home to get them out of bed first 7:27 am, Tue 8 Sep
Stupid question #1 - what will it take to get a WOF? erelyes (239 )  11:07 pm, Mon 7 Sep
Lots. Lots and lots. The doors don't open, it has half of the drivers seat remaining, no seatbelts, rigid rear suspension, knarly prop on the back, bla bla bla 7:28 am, Tue 8 Sep
Hi there, any rust problems as yet? Also I'd like the motor and trans checked by my mechanic as I'm concerned that it's been driven at the rate of knots....Good onya guys, a great achievement and good luck with the sale! franc123 (207 )  11:11 pm, Mon 7 Sep
No nasty rust problems yet. Only a couple of light patches. We've been putting it in fresh water areas after use. We had it in Lake Taupo yesterday 7:29 am, Tue 8 Sep
Does it offer any kind of pirate protection? squeak41 (40 )  11:32 pm, Mon 7 Sep
Yaaargh!? Just play slayer on the stereo 7:30 am, Tue 8 Sep
Well done dudes! You guys rock!! Keep up the inspiration :) baldrick269 (250 )  11:52 pm, Mon 7 Sep
Cheers bro 7:30 am, Tue 8 Sep
mean as van bro. how did you power the prop i dont see an outboard? 1234_liz (13 )  1:08 am, Tue 8 Sep
It's a 4wd. So we've used the front wheels to power it on land. Instead of taking the rear driveshaft to the diff, we've machined a new one that goes over the top of it to the prop. Just drive in and you're away! 7:31 am, Tue 8 Sep
Hi chaps, Why don't you make these for a living for a while- you'll make a fortune! Would need to make them road legal as well but that can't be too hard... I'll take 10% for the inspiration! Cheers! thomastrader (31 )  8:06 am, Tue 8 Sep
Great idea! I'll give ya 11% 11:35 am, Tue 8 Sep
Well I just reached my $20 pocket money limit for the week (stupid auto-bid). Maybe I will ask mum for another week in advance? P.S. You guys are what No. 8 wire NZ used to be! Keep up the massive work. You inspire a whole lot of people. Cheers! jabriggs (4 )  8:07 am, Tue 8 Sep
Cheers mate! Guts about not getting a van for $20 though 11:36 am, Tue 8 Sep
do you think this would make it to the great barrier and back? musicworld (106 )  9:38 am, Tue 8 Sep
No worries at all. I may be at the Barrier for new years so I hope I see it there! 11:37 am, Tue 8 Sep
Can you fit a double-sized mattress in the back? bofors40 (11 )  10:38 am, Tue 8 Sep
Yep. The love boatvan 11:38 am, Tue 8 Sep
When this is at the end of its amphibious life (may it be a long way off!) it would be awesome to see it wind up at Te Papa along with all the other great Kiwi achievements!! I also wouldnt mind bumping into it out on the water having a fish one day!! Nice one guys, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!! volcom_smp (90 )  10:46 am, Tue 8 Sep
Haha cheers mate. We'll have to throw it next to the corrugated iron HQ Holden 11:39 am, Tue 8 Sep
awesome idea guys seemed to work well! what are you planning on doing next? can roofliss be test driven on and off land before purchasing? lucas69 (167 )  10:48 am, Tue 8 Sep
Yeah it could be, certainly. As long as you're in Auckland and put in a serious bid 11:39 am, Tue 8 Sep
and would you swap for my listing? check it out... lucas69 (167 )  10:49 am, Tue 8 Sep
It's pretty sick mate but I'm gonna have to turn it down 11:41 am, Tue 8 Sep
Dude, have you emailed the BBC and let Top Gear know? You could be on the telly jonathanisageek (41 )  11:26 am, Tue 8 Sep
Yeah we're gonna have to. We've still got to get most of the footage and stuff from the trip so that we can get a video together for Jeremy Clarkson to cry over! 11:42 am, Tue 8 Sep
Total and utter legends. Many people jealous of your adventure, myself included. Time to get outta the house and do wickedly cool stuff like you's. manofthematch (24 )  11:31 am, Tue 8 Sep
Yeah mate, jump in 11:42 am, Tue 8 Sep
Following on from my previous question - How many people can you fit in the back when on sea and land? Also, how much does the van rock when in the sea and on land? bofors40 (11 )  11:33 am, Tue 8 Sep
You can fit four people comfortably in it. And it's very stable! We never had a dodgy moment in the Strait 11:43 am, Tue 8 Sep
Seller Comment: To everybody in the Supercity of Auckland. We're off to the Viaduct for a cruise after work today. Come for a perv. Don't get in the way of the girls though 11:45 am, Tue 8 Sep
Thats exactly where I was thinking it should go as well mate! and they should bring the britten around by them as well!! volcom_smp (90 )  11:46 am, Tue 8 Sep
Yeah shit yeah 1:25 pm, Tue 8 Sep
$10 straight from our CEO's pocket says our 126 year old steam boat can take your van in a race around the Viaduct maritime_museum (0 )  11:53 am, Tue 8 Sep
Bullshit. Le Mans Start. No warmup. Tell your CEO he's in for a loss 1:26 pm, Tue 8 Sep
how stable is it. Could it handle a wave from the side. it looks like it would be easily tipped over? van_rexel (170 )  12:03 pm, Tue 8 Sep
Well we got across the Strait OK. It's as stable as any similar sized boat would be 1:26 pm, Tue 8 Sep
Hey guys - we would LOVE to have your van on display at the Waikato Boat, Fishing & Leisure Show, Mystery Creek Events Centre, Hamilton 16-18 October 2009. Cruising in our lake & parked up lake side for close-up viewing, the hard core boaties, fishos and kids would love it! Roofliss (and yourselves) would be an awesome addition to the show! Please call or email me - Jacqui at Mystery Creek Events Centre, sorry - can't put in my ph # (per TradeMe) but it's in Google! Good on ya! cottonbud2 (0 )  12:04 pm, Tue 8 Sep
I'll give you a call. We'll have to talk to the new owners, but I'm sure they won't mind 1:27 pm, Tue 8 Sep
Marcus Lush spoke to Adam yesterday and Trade Me CEO Jon MacDonald about this auction today. Interviews are here: http://tr.im/vF2K teamdj1 (10 )  12:27 pm, Tue 8 Sep
. 1:28 pm, Tue 8 Sep
I represent the Cuban Tourist Comission (CTC). We organise boat trips to the USA-mostly one way, and wonder if you could supply about 300 of these for our clients. Also could you convert buses to do the same job but carry more people. We can arrange payment by supplying your noble country with stress relieving medication and cigars. Cheers Alfeeidericko. muzzaduck (309 )  1:01 pm, Tue 8 Sep
I'm writing out a quote already. The longer waterline length of the bus will stand it in good stead for speed. We'll take your payment with open arms! 1:29 pm, Tue 8 Sep
So u obvly made it over the strait on less than a tank of diesel - how much did it take - and approx. wat cost? Also does it need to be regd as a marine vessel - and did u take rods - or do any fishing then - or at any time - good luck with auction - guys. Also - how do u steer it wen its in the water? rockee01 (216 )  1:45 pm, Tue 8 Sep

how do you get the van town to town i relise it drives on land but what do the police have to say about this sweet ride? christinii (15 )  2:13 pm, Tue 8 Sep
The police don't give a toss when it's on a transporter. And we're driving it down the harbor from Hobsonville. Too low for the 5 oh 3:28 pm, Tue 8 Sep
How would it handle getting to gannet rock at Muriwai do ya reckon (for fishing)? boardian (72 )  2:45 pm, Tue 8 Sep

how is it cooled & how has engine compartment been waterproofed?if hamilton muesem paid $10000 for some rubbish this is a 6 figure item surely. jonboym (212 )  6:48 pm, Wed 9 Sep
The radiator is left outside the engne compartment so that it sits in the water. It never heats up too much at all. The engine box has been sealed to the floor of the van and encompasses the whole engine and gearbox so that they're effectively inside the cabin of the van 7:34 am, Thu 10 Sep
You dudes are hot jennifer104 (154 )  6:52 pm, Wed 9 Sep

GR8 boat. Another record to chase could be an Island circumnavigation, eg Sommes Island in the Wellington Harbour. Better still set up a van race around the island. All the Wellington girls might fall preggers though... Have fun!!! stevevee (70 )  10:39 pm, Wed 9 Sep
Wellington skanks! Mean idea 7:44 am, Thu 10 Sep
You are probably sick of answering questions but how for up the motor does the water come and is the fan modified. (you probably have fur seals on the driveshaft ) bobw5 (224 )  11:01 pm, Wed 9 Sep
If water got into where the motor is, I'd be pretty worried. The motor stays completely dry. And the van is slightly modified. Don't try driving your standard Townace down a boatramp 7:45 am, Thu 10 Sep
Hi Guys, I was going to bid but figured you already got $1,000 out of my hubby for that bet - wonder who will win the next one, should have gone double or nothing :-) Cheers, Kate kjwild (683 )  7:28 am, Thu 10 Sep

We were there and ready to thrash your steamboat. Roofliss owns 12:34 pm, Thu 10 Sep
maximum respect to you. someone here mentioned doing a bus, I like that concept and was wondering with the bigger wheel wells, if you could vulcanise paddles (like hillclimb bikes) onto the insides of the back tyres , bit like a paddle-wheel boat, then wouldnt need the prop system. thoughts? keep up the great works. woodart1 (21 )  9:26 am, Thu 10 Sep
It wouldn't work unless you can get at least half the wheel out of the water. Otherwise you'll get them trying to push you backwards as well as forwards. Good to see you're getting into it though! 12:36 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Number 8 wire kiwi attitude and some Tui's You'll never drive a van across cook straight........."Yeah Right" pounamu24 (25 )  9:46 am, Thu 10 Sep

did the electrical wiring mixed with water make you feel a bit edgy during the trip? nucropolics (56 )  12:25 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Not at all! There's no loom left in it. Only what there needs to be to run the motor and fully sick sound system 12:42 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Is there an aerial still, and could you dangle a line for fishing off it? nucropolics (56 )  12:25 pm, Thu 10 Sep
No aerial at the mo. Yeah, we fitted a rod holder for that reason 12:44 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Do you still have to pay road user charges with this since it's using the ocean currents? nucropolics (56 )  12:26 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Nah mate, no worries. We unhooked the speedo! We were working on the suggestion that the po po wouldn't set any check points up half way across 12:45 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Have you asked for a tax rebate since you're not using our roads as much? nucropolics (56 )  12:26 pm, Thu 10 Sep
No. But thats a great idea! 12:46 pm, Thu 10 Sep
i hope you got a good insurance cover you may need it to cover all the child maintance bills. seen as your van got so many ladys in the 9 month way. hope you make heaps of money on the deal godwincontract2 (212 )  12:59 pm, Thu 10 Sep

Mate, don't sell it yet - have ya thought about sealing over the top half of the van also and attaching a couple of rockets and one of those sick van body kids with tail fins... bring your scuba tanks fer breathing and you can drop off some groceries to the international space station on yer way back and save nasa about 2 billion bucks! hobiecat17 (5 )  2:21 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Great idea! 7:39 am, Fri 11 Sep

If u had to - could u add more fuel when u in water? Also - when u put the $1 price tag on it - did u have any figure in mind wat it may fetch? - if so has it exceeded - or not reached your target figure? Toileting must have been a bit embarrassing with yr support crew watching you? rockee01 (216 )  2:41 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Yep. The filler is inside the van. Toiletting wasn't an issue with a beer coat on 7:41 am, Fri 11 Sep
Sell it to Jeremy Clarkson - he lives on an island - it is probably just what he has been looking for in a car all these years :-) stobbo1 (102 )  2:45 pm, Thu 10 Sep

Well done,I can see a special board meeting being called at Toyota,as you have proven that Toyotas are no longer the most boring thing on wheels. And Hamilton needs you too.Best regards Steveo sandrae1 (44 )  9:54 pm, Thu 10 Sep
Cheers mate! 10:34 am, Fri 11 Sep
Is there any rust in the body,( Toyota are bad for it) does it come with any fishing gear, fish finder, & do you think it would be ok as a dive boat ? Oh yes the kids want to know if the wakes ok for wakeboarding behind ? If yes to all these I'll place a bid belter2 (18 )  10:02 pm, Thu 10 Sep
It'd be great as a dive boat. Just look out for the relatively sharp items of suspension/driveline on the way back up! As of yet, there's only minor rust in the body. We've been dipping it in fresh water lakes after every test and hosing it down to try and contain the rust. And the steel used for sealing it up was all galv plated. No fish finder (we were keen as for one) or fishing gear 10:37 am, Fri 11 Sep
oh my god - your right!! Just by having the van/boat in my drive on Sunday night has got me pregnant!!! :-) kjwild (683 )  10:21 pm, Thu 10 Sep

hey im interested in this van but i dont think it has enough power, say you fitted a pretzel exhaust maifold and re-routed the piping around the engine twice , could that double the horsepower? my mate bolted one into his cefiro and it goes hard. I think a set of tridents would set the van off too, like in that drawing you made. daviepants (5 )  12:48 pm, Fri 11 Sep
We've actually re-re-routed the Repco brand opti-minipretzel round the southern side of the fuel tank. We've got all sorts of parts ready to bolt on (like the MoTec system internal upper sump valve bracket, and the variable timing apex seals from Daihatsu) but we're just too scared of the power it would make. Probably in excess of 3000 units 12:55 pm, Fri 11 Sep
just want to say is sweet ride go dudes...yer. fjholden (14 )  2:01 pm, Fri 11 Sep

I heard that you actually stopped in the middle of the straight to shotgun a few cans of Tui, then followed that with some extreme man love moments that are X-rated and managed to kick off the battery terminal in the process. monkey_5 (102 )  6:30 pm, Fri 11 Sep
Haha yeah there may have been a midpoint shotgun in there but no man love moments to speak of eh. Scurvy hadn't set in that bad 9:55 am, Sat 12 Sep

You reckon it hasn't got an aerial. But I've been studying the photos. I've got some bad news for all those newly-expectant young ladies in that yellow water-taxi. (You removed the photo. The best photo of the bunch!) You see that white stick on the left rear (sorry, port quarter)? The one with the Tui flag flying from the top? That is without any doubt the beginning of a bad case of Vanaerial Disease... crocs3 (11 )  11:52 pm, Fri 11 Sep
