Hillman Avenger 1974

Here's Scarlett, a special Hillman Avenger Super I’ve owned for 5 years. I'm reducing my car collection, so time for a new home. Always been well maintained as I'm a mechanic. New parts are still available and I’ve replaced the water pump, radiator, carpets and fitted electronic ignition, an electric demister and halogen headlights.

After 38 years her body is still straight, with fading paint. The speedo's not original, but I think the kms are close. I've replaced the factory clutch, while she still has her original rear brakes and does drive like a low km car. Avengers are rare in metallic maroon, it's usually a Charger colour, see auction 491604609. Both cars were made by Todd Motors and could share colours.

Scarlett thinks she IS a Charger, as she's more powerful than a standard Super. I wondered why and checked the motor...saw it has double valve springs. I thought a previous owner had fitted an 80hp Avenger Alpine engine, but found the engine number matches the chassis plate, so the Alpine motor was factory fitted in 1974! The Super has a single carb...easy to tune with more torque than Alpine twin carbs, which can be retro-fitted.

The Avenger was a well designed 1970’s car...lighter, faster and more economical than previous Hillmans. Back then the speed limit was 80 km/h so no 5th gear needed. For quieter 100 km/h driving I’ve fitted genuine under bonnet sound proofing, an electric radiator fan and Alpine wheels on the rear with taller 185/80 tyres.

Scarlett’s being sold as is where is, with WOF and rego until Jan 2013...then only one year until $111 classic rego on 1st Jan 2014. Insurance is cheap too, cost me just $82 full cover for $4000. As a bonus for the new owner, I’ve given her a full service, including changing the engine, gearbox and diff oil along with the brake fluid and engine coolant...and will include a genuine handbook and her own Mini Me.

She's a unique Avenger...was probably ordered new from the factory in a Charger colour with an Alpine engine!?
