1986 Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth

NZ$128k new in 1986, it really was a top of the line car and now represents great value for a very rare and collectable, appreciating modern classic. Unlike their BMW E30 M3 counterparts, the prices haven’t yet taken off but in many ways the Mercedes could be argued to be the better road car. These cars have a very interesting history which is worth looking up if you don’t already know it.

Sadly, with a new house purchase I just don’t have the time to give the car the attention that it deserves so it is currently garaged with the rego on hold. I am not sure exactly what would be required for a WOF, the last one was about a year ago now but I shouldn’t think too much.

Though not a mint example it is mechanically very good and quite original with only 127,599 miles on the clock. It could do with a bit of TLC but has held up very well for a now 29 year old car. In my time I have rebuilt the brakes, put in new shocks, suspension bushes, done the valve timing etc.

It has a large, very interesting history file that comes with the car including the original manual and service books and was originally imported from Hong Kong in 1990 in the non-standard white. It hasn’t been played with and is pretty original with all the standard 2.3-16 bits; LSD, getrag gearbox, very rare working adjustable rear suspension, full leather recaro seats etc. The interior is in tidy condition with just a bit of wear to the driver’s bolster and a patch to the top of the rear seat.

There is some rust starting to show through now which you will hopefully see from the photos. It could do with a body freshen up more than anything. It comes with the original stereo, which is currently not working due to a wiring issue that I haven’t managed to track down. The air conditioning appears to all be there but does not work. The heater fan is noisy but does work. It will need a new rear muffler at some point.
