Firewalls and how to surf safely
These days, firewalls are a standard part of your default computer package. If you are a general user and using a computer with Windows or iOS as the operating system, you’ll most likely have a firewall running and protecting your computer.Connecting to the internet without a firewall can allow hackers access to your computer without your permission, so it’s important not to turn off this feature unless you know what you’re doing.
A firewall works by examining all information exchanged between your computer and the internet. It will identify and block suspect incoming connections from accessing your computer, while allowing you to access the information you're after. Be wary of any advice or programme that asks you to disable your firewall.
Phones and other mobile devices are similarly protected – however, if you are connecting to a public and open Wi-Fi hotspot (such as at your local café) then the security of any information that you send is compromised. It’s recommended that you do not use public Wi-Fi hotspots to access private or sensitive information.
As with all computer-related security, it’s important to know what your device or computer should be doing. If you notice anything suspicious, please get in touch with us or online security agencies like The Orb or Netsafe. These agencies are great resources for keeping an eye on current scams and also for general security advice.
