Position Description - Greenstone Track Host

Ultimate Hikes offers guided multi-day walks on New Zealand's Milford and Routeburn Tracks, blending hiking with comfortable lodges and exceptional hospitality in Fiordland and Mt Aspiring National Parks. Join our team to create unforgettable guest experiences in stunning locations!

Purpose

As a Greenstone Lodge Host, you'll be the heart of our remote lodges, ensuring guests and staff enjoy exceptional hospitality, delicious meals, and a pristine environment. Based at our Greenstone Track lodges, you'll work in a close-knit team to create memorable experiences for up to 24 guests daily. This role is perfect for those who thrive in remote settings, love hospitality, and are passionate about the outdoors. The role is seasonal, from early October 2025 until mid April 2026.

Key responsibilities

  • Hospitality & Guest Experience: Create a warm, welcoming lodge atmosphere, delivering outstanding service, meals, and housekeeping that exceed expectations.
  • Cooking & Food Management: Prepare, cook, and present breakfast, dinner, and snacks daily, adhering to set menus, portion control, and dietary requirements. Manage stock, ordering, and food storage to company standards.
  • Housekeeping: Perform daily cleaning tasks, including guest rooms, bathrooms, laundry, and lodge maintenance, with thorough mid- and end-of-season cleans.
  • Health & Safety: Uphold safety standards, comply with the Food Control Plan, and ensure lodge equipment is safe and well-maintained.
  • Administration: Complete lodge reports, timesheets, and communicate promptly with the Operations team to resolve issues.
  • Teamwork: Foster a collaborative, positive workplace, supporting lodge setup, maintenance, and adapting to flexible schedules (including split shifts, evenings, and weekends).

Relationships

The role reports to the Lodges Manager and Operations Manager, and also works closely with the overall Operations team.

Person specifications

We seek enthusiastic, resilient individuals with a passion for hospitality and the outdoors. You'll need to thrive in a remote environment, work well in a team, and maintain professionalism under pressure

  • A passion for delivering exceptional guest experiences and hospitality
  • Minimum 6 months' experience in basic cooking or a commercial kitchen
  • Ability to manage stock and ordering
  • Strong team player with problem-solving skills and composure under pressure
  • Confidence in addressing groups (guests and team members)
  • High physical fitness and a love for tramping/hiking
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and adaptable to new systems
  • Current Level 2 Comprehensive First Aid (NZ) and Manager's Certificate (supply & sale of alcohol)
  • Right to work in New Zealand
