We’re looking for a Town Custodian & Gardener to join our highly dedicated team in Wanaka.

What you’ll be doing / He aha te mahi A crucial role in keeping our communities looking their best, this is an exciting opportunity to play your part. Taking responsibility for horticulture work throughout our parks and reserves as well as managing the cleanliness of our town centre for both residents and visitors. The role will involve:

  • Ensuring Wānaka garden areas are kept in a clean and tidy condition, in accordance with approved horticultural practices.
  • Identifying issues, defects and resolving these via own efforts or working with relevant contractors.
  • Maintaining, renovating and developing shrub, flower and rose bed areas, weeding, leaf removal, mulching and spraying of weeds and for disease control.
  • Using machinery, chemicals and a range of high-end equipment across a range of maintenance work.

What you’ll bring to the role / Ko wai tō Pukeka You’ll be no stranger to hands-on work and will enjoy the satisfaction that comes from seeing your work pay off. We are looking for candidates who have a genuine long-term interest in gardening and outdoor work, this role requires a level of passion and detail that is perfect for someone with long-term career plans in this space. Ideally you will also have strong people skills and will enjoy speaking with the public to help resolve issues and inform them of what’s going on. Due to the nature of this role, you’ll be required to work weekends, public holidays, and evenings on a rostered basis. In addition to this, you’ll:

  • Have a current clean and full driver license.
  • Have a good level of physical fitness as the role involves heavy lifting and operating machinery.
  • Be able to prioritise and effectively manage multiple jobs.
  • Enjoy working autonomously.
