Attributed to Jacques Gamelin (1738–1803) Antique battle scene

Pen and brown ink, gouache and white bodycolour on grey-brown prepared paper

The dimensions of the drawing are 410 x 703 mm. It is mounted in a wash mount with a further acid-free mount overlapping this. The whole is framed (giltwood frame) and glazed.

An impressive and highly-finished drawing in the classical vein, depicting a cavalry assault. The subject has not been positively identified.

The drawing was acquired in September 2015 from the Dorotheum auction house, Vienna, where it was attributed to Gamelin. (NB: An attribution is an informed opinion only as to who is likely to be the artist responsible for a work of art.)
