As Foreign Minister during the American hostage crisins in Iran. Sadegh Ghotbzadeh well known in the West. a long-time supporter of the Ayatollah Khomeini, he was a key figure in the revolutionary government until he was caught in a bloody struggle for power within Iran, convicted of treason, and executed. The story of this remarkable and complex man is a tale of youthful idealism, of super-power politics in the Middle East, and of revolutionary goals betrayed. It is told by Canadian journalist Carole Jerome who feel in love with him while he was exile in Paris and returned with him to Iran at the start of the Revolution. Her story provides a unique first-hand account of one of the most dramatic and far-reaching events of recent times. East and West meet in the person of Sadegh Ghotbzadeth. Educated in the U.S.A. and Canada, he became a fervent supporter of the exiled Ayatollah Khomeini and a central figure in the governemt-in-exile. Jerome traces his life as a revolutionary - from his student days in the U.S. where he gained the support of Bobby Kennedy, to his work as member of the Liberation Movement for Iran and his triumphant return with Khomeini to the faction-torn country. She takes us into the heart of the revolution, describing the behind-the-scenes planning for Khomeini's seizure of power, the bloody religious struggles and fierce Islamic fundamentalism imposed on Iran, and the ultimate betrayal of moderates such as Ghotbzadeh who saw their dreams for a new Iran destroyed. She talks of her love for a man whose revolutionary idealism would sweep him to the heights of power and ultimately bring about his destruction.
