Description
This is an auction for OLD Wellington HOTELS by Pat Lawlor.
"Pat Lawlor's OLD WELLINGTON HOTELS covers a field much wider than its title suggests. Apart from giving a lively history of over one hundred hotels the author paints the social pattern of the times in vivid colours. After all many of the important movements of the early days he tells of, whether these movements were political or social, originated in the licensed houses of the period. The book is crammed with anecdote and with personalities. The pictures alone reveal many interesting aspects of the city and environs although the main point of interest is the hotel depicted. Forgotten aspects of streets and other buildings are revealed and in this respect each of the 100 or so photographs has been carefully selected. In between times the story reveals interesting aspects of the licensing laws over the years and the many changes that took place. The terrific battles between the "Drys" and the "Wets" show up from time to time and mention is made of some of those who played a leading part in the triennial contents. In this connection the pictures show many hotels that lost their licenses in the local option polls."
