Description
This is an auction for AN ANGEL AT MY TABLE by Janet Frame.
"Janet Frame, the most celebrated New Zealand author of the 20th century, returned frequently to the theme of the outsider. She was wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1945 and spent most of the following eight years in a series of mental institutions, narrowly escaping a lobotomy thanks to the critical acclaim surrounding her first book, The Lagoon and Other Stories. Frame is an anomalous outsider: crippled by shyness and feelings of awkwardness, she nonetheless maintained a wide circle of close friends and was celebrated during her lifetime. Perhaps her most famous works are the three volumes of autobiography, in which she describes in prose of mesmerising exactness and beauty her upbringing in New Zealand's South Island, her years of mental distress and her eventual acceptance into the literary community."
