Description
This is an auction for COLONIAL TEARS & SWEAT: THE WORKING CLASS IN 19th CENTURY NEW ZEALAND by Julia Millen.
"For many thousands of people in 19th century New Zealand, life in the colony was no glorious adventure. It was a land in which only the fittest survived, and the most enterprising prospered. And it was only these fortunate few whose achievements have filled the pages of history books and whose exploits have become synonymous with our great pioneering spirit. For the rest, fortune was less kind. They came half-way round the world, bringing with them little except their youth, their hopes, and their children. Many of them died here, their names forgotten. Surprisingly little is know of of the lives of New Zealand's colonial working class. COLONIAL TEARS & SWEAT tells the story of these forgotten immigrants whose presence, though unacknowledged, was vital so that others could prosper. Special emphasis is placed on the lot of single women, domestic servants and children, for it was they who - along with the less respectable class of immigrant: the vagabonds, dance girls, prostitutes and hotel workers - suffered most. Their stories offer a vivid new perspective of life 'down under'."
