Description
This is an auction for OLD TARANAKI AND ITS MOUNTAIN, by Campbell McAllister.
"Thirty years after the first settlement of Stratford in 1878, the author, as a boy, was old enough to appreciate stories told him by surviving pioneers, and himself saw lingering evidence of how hard their life had been. These memories make up the first part of this book; supplemented by his research into other sources, including some unpublished, to cover the wider area of Taranaki Province, and the greater period when commenced from 1841. From the fascination for mountain and bush kindled by many adventures in boyhood, and later, come the author's anecdotes for the second part of the book, describing climbs and ramblings on the mountain - triumphs or disappointments - in sunshine or storm, in welcome companionship or unavoidably alone. For many, the book's greatest attraction will be the author's liberal use of his father's collection of pioneering life photographs; the negatives now safely held in the Alexander Turnbull Library."
