Description
Temple Fork Outfitters Hayden II reel and spare spool.
Pick up in Kingsland, Central Auckland
This is a good, solid, mid-range SWF reel. It has huge line capacity, so is suitable for big fish like kings or GTs, or the smaller tunas. It's quite light, so is also fine for snapper. I used it on a 10WT and a 12WT.
I have caught some good fish on it, and it hasn't let me down.
Pictured are two kings of 83-86cm, caught from the rocks last summer.
Left to right retrieve swap is not tricky. You just need a 20c coin or similar to remove the spool. It's set to left hand retrieve at the moment, but I can change it if you prefer right.
There are a couple of things I don't like about it, which I'll describe so you can take them into account if deciding whether to bid.
First, the low end of the drag is very loose freespool, so if you have it set that low, when a fish powers off, it can overrun. I think you could fix this by adding small shim washers.
Second, the drag is cork, so if the reel gets dunked, the drag doesn't function well at all, tending to slip. This isn't really a problem if you are boat fishing, but it is a pain for stalking the flats or on the rocks.
Have a look around for reviews- they are all positive that I can find.
Questions welcomed.
A good solid option if you are boat fishing for big chaps and want power and line capacity.
Tom.
