Description
For sale is the Checker Challenger, manufactured by Fidelity Electronics of Chicago, Illinois.
At a guess, we believe it was manufactured in approximately 1980 - it was listed in the 100 games of 1980 along side the likes of twister, rubiks cube, and the less well known "StarForce 'Alpha Centauri': Interstellar Conflict in the 25th Century". Dad tells me the 'checker challenger' was undoubtedly the most fun you could have by yourself at that time......hence my arrival in 1981.
Not being outdone by its more popular older cousin the 'Chess Challenger', the 'Checker Challenger' is made of tasteful but robust solid wood casing. Its brown and beige in colour, and the girls tell me that brown is the new black so this thing is def on the cusp of being trendy again.
Some say this beautiful piece of computing history is a triumph of style and elegance, but best you be the judge of that. There is no doubt that this is vintage electronics at its best.
Game is in full working order, comes with 'Handcrafted' wooden playing pieces. One piece is missing from each colour, but easily replaceable with similar pieces or something else using a bit of imagination. What you use as game pieces does not affect the games operation. It has been suggested a 60ml glass would be a suitable substitute.
This was originally purchased for display/use in Trade Me's foyer in December 2004- but we are looking for some new toys so this is also an opportunity to purchase a little piece of Trade Me history.
