Description
In the late 50's AC cars in Thames Ditton, Surrey, UK, built a 2 seat sports car to rival Jaguar, Austin Healey, Triumph and Ferrari.
Carroll Shelby of Shelby Cobra fame spotted the 'AC Ace' at the British Motor Show in London in the early 60's and proposed to AC that their rugged 4inch tubular steel chassis was perfect for a new American Ford V8 engine.
Shelby dreamed of having his own sports car to beat Ferrari who dominated Sports Car racing at that time. He even had a name for his dream...Cobra.
AC built only 200 Ace's and only 37 AC Ace RS's which had a different nose and bonnet line. Original cars are valued at +180000 dollars.
My car is a faithful replica of the AC Ace RS from which the Cobra was born.
The fibreglass body and tube steel chassis were built by Hawke Cars in the UK who have made approximately 10 of this style. BMW straight 6, 2500cc engine and gearbox from a mid 70's Series 5 and backaxle, suspension, brakes, propshaft, steering and wheels from a 67 MGB roadster.
The car was assembled by my mate in the UK and made roadworthy in 1997. I brought it to NZ in 2005 and had it vinned and Registered under LVVTA.
It has original style interior, hood hoops and sidescreens but no hood yet and a full tonneau cover. It will be sold with a years License and 6 months WOF.
It drives and feels like an original.
Land Transport Registration Certificate shows this car as originally registered in 1967.
