Description
Ah, the Oliver – a typer little known outside of but highly regarded within the esoteric circles of the Typosphere. She is a less-common machine, but her high reputation precedes her
You feel serious when you sit down with her. Her Bodoni (also known as Imperial or Congress) typeface is for typing only the most austere, enchanting, Gothic, or mysterious things. She makes for serene autumn clacking, when the leaves are all withering and sere.
Serial no.: 56-28265 - Oliver Typewriter Manufacturing Co, LTD. 80 Gloucester Road, Croydon, England. 1956. Also marketed/branded as: Conqueror; Monitor; Tower Collegian. Offspring of the Swiss "Patria" typewriter, second generation with shell designed by Max Bill.
She has a typebar-return mechanism whereby the typebars return in an incremental motion to soften their landing. She's had an eventful life and has all the wear and some rust to show it. She is quite an easy typer and her simple features all seem to work. She has a sharp clack to her with a moderate bite to her snap. Her bell still goes bing.
I get machines functioning but I leave the cosmetic, aesthetic stuff up to the new owner. She could use a thorough cleaning/dusting and possibly rust-treatment if you want to improve her appearance. Some of the white paint in the letter-grooves of her keys has faded. Get a small brush, some white paint, turn up the Brandenburg Concertos, make an afternoon of it. Or you could just use her in her rough-and-ready state. The front badge is missing – as they are with the majority of Oliver Couriers I have encountered. You could put your name here or you could print the original decal and attach it here or you could leave it as it is. The wooden case is covered in some kind of interesting snake-skin leatherette. It's very worn in places and the handle of the case is rusted but working. Please see pictures as they form part of the description. I am selling as is.

Hey does this still work and are there any issues with it s**g (56 • 7:26 am, Tue, 21 May )Hi there, I've been typing away on her just fine. All the issues that I am aware of are stated in the description. elliot48 (251 • Tuesday, 21 May 2024 )Also how do you refill the ink s**g (56 • 7:26 am, Tue, 21 May )These typewriters use an ink ribbon which lasts a long time - months - and when the ink has run out on the ribbon you can buy a brand new replacement ribbon for quite cheap on Trademe. Thankfully, they still make cheap typewriter ribbons. elliot48 (251 • Tuesday, 21 May 2024 )
