2. Further details: LAYERED ECOLOGY symbolises the ecosystem of New Zealand estuaries through the abstract images of trees, water, bush, land and creatures blending into one entity. Each part has a flow-on effect, making it hard to distinguish one from the other, the light and dark veins of paint accentuating this. Only the sails and the obscure structure in the background are separate from this entity. They represent recreation and industry: one enjoying the estuary, the other affecting it negatively. The consequences are directly beneath it, where vague forms of bottlenose dolphins (a regular visitor to Tamaki Estuary in particular) disappear due to the waterway and their food supply being impacted. While the other dolphin (representing marine life) and the pukeko (representing birds) are more distinct since they’re further away from the pollution. Lastly, the depiction of pages (outlined) not only tie into the layered theme, but symbolises an abstract book on ecology, teaching the viewer to take better care of our waterways.
