Description
Ron Mueck's work first came to the attention of a wide audience when his moving and poignant work Dead Dad, 1996-97, was included in the history-making exhibition Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection, which opened in London at the Royal Academy in September 1997. Since then he has established a strong international reputation for his moving and poignant sculptures, sometimes colossal, sometimes miniature, which resonate with deep emotion. Special milestones, among many, have been his two-year residency as Associate Artist at the National Gallery, London (starting in 2000), and his highly publicised representation at the Venice Biennale in 2001 with Boy, 1999. first exhibited in London in 2000 in the Millennium Dome.
This publication accompanies the National Gallery of Victoria's first major exhibition of Ron Mueck's sculptures. It is fitting that, in his original home town, it is one of the largest and most comprehensive exhibitions of his work ever to be mounted with four new sculptures, in addition to a number of his most important works, including the now-iconic Dead Dad.
We are delighted to be able to present this publication with its insightful perspectives on the works included in the exhibition. The contributions by prominent writers, many of whom have followed Mueck's practice closely for many years. This is perhaps the most comprehensive record of Mueck's oeuvre to date. take this opportunity to thank the authors most sincerely.
