In the three volumes of his now famous autobiography, The Growing Boy, The Years of Promise, The Bright Twenties, Cecil Roberts covered the years 1892-1929. In Sunshine And Shadow he carries his story to 1946. In 1930 he bought Pilgrim cottage, where he wrote the much-loved novels, Spears Against Us, Pilgrim Cottage, Victoria Four-Thirty, and non-fiction Half Way, Gone Rustic, And So To Bath etc. To his cottage came the famous and the soon-to-be famous. We meet there a bright and varied company. He travelled frequently, possessed of a prescient political sense. In 1930 he came back from Germany alarmed by what he found there. He was in Munich on the eve of Hitler's 'Night of the Long Knives'. He felt that the betrayal of Czechoslovakia at Munich had sealed the doom of Europe, and made plans accordingly.
