Description
This is an auction for THE WESTERNERS by Dee Brown.
Amazon.com reviews:
"FIVE STARS!! This is the best Western history book ever! Short, 10-20 page fascinating histories of episodes in Western history, with excellent illustrations in each case: the Coronado expedition that "discovered" most of the Southwest, cattle drives, the Gold Rush, the turning of the war machine created in the Civil War to massacre the Plains Indians, and much more. Dee Brown is famous as the author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, the history of the West from the Native American perspective."
FIVE STARS! This is a wonderfully illustrated history of the American West by Dee Brown of "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" fame. It chronicles the early exploration of the West up till the end of the Cowboy era, and the complete dispossession of the American Indian.”
"FIVE STARS! This is one of the saddest books I have read. The exploitation of the American native peoples is really heart-breaking. The new Americans had so little respect for the country. They seemed to see the natural world solely as something to be exploited for their personal benefit, and the less said about their ruthless cut-throat behaviour the better. Looking back, and this book helps a lot, you can see how much was lost and how much better things might have been had some restraint and compassion been shown in those early stages of expansion. We might ended up with something far more interesting than the mono-culture and fairy-tale heroes we see in the US of today.”
