"The Whitcombe brothers, Charles, Reginald and Ernest together with Ernest's son Eddie, have made a unique impact on the world of golf. The author has captured the joys, hardships and triumphs of the Whitcombes and indeed the life and struggle of the professional golfer of the period.
The brothers were born just before the turn of the century in Burnham. Their father had been "keeper of the Warren" and greenkeeper at the Burnham and Berrow course and it was there that they spent their childhood and first came in contact with the game.
It was not long before the name of Whitcombe appeared in the tournaments and challenge matches and the name continued in the forefront of professional golf for nearly 40 years. They won most of the professional tournaments in their peak years. Whilst competing in tournaments wherever possible they also held professional posts at such clubs as Parkstone, Came Down, Crews Hill,Meyrick Park and Chigwell.
The brothers were involved with the Ryder Cup from the inception and had the unique distinction of all being selected to play in the three 1935 Ryder Cup team. Charles was three times Captain of the Ryder Cup team including 1949 when his opposite number was Ben Hogan.
The brothers had unrivalled performances in the Open Championship from the mid 1920s to the late 1940s. In 1938 Reg won the title at Sandwich and Charles achieved six top places between 1923 and 1937 whilst Ernie was runner- up to Walter Hagen in 1924 Eddie was renowned for his ability to personalize golf clubs for the finest players. His customers included Cotton, Alliss, Rees and on one occasion Ben Hogan."
