Description
This is an auction for THE JUNIOR OFFICERS' READING CLUB by Patrick Hennessey.
Amazon.com reviews:
"The Junior Officers' Reading Club is the story of how officers in the British Army are made. Written in spare and lucid prose, it describes not only the frenetic violence of a soldier's life but the periods of stifling and (sometimes) comic boredom in an army caught between a world that needs it and a society that no longer understands it."
“FIVE STARS! I loved every page of this book. Haunting, descriptive, and amazing. A great account of what the military go through.”
“FIVE STARS!! Hennessey entered the Royal Army and wound up at Sandhurst, graduating and going off to war, first in Iraq and then Afghanistan. He saw almost no combat in Iraq, and he and his junior officer comrades were so bored they started the club of the title. When he gets to Afghanistan, it's almost one long stream-of-consciousness series of events as he essentially flies through the fighting, joking with comrades, and bonding with the locals while trying to survive. This is a war memoir in every sense of the word. It's an impressionist's depiction of how he saw the war, and what he felt about it. At that level, it's incredible, and very worthwhile, in addition to being entertaining. Recommended.”
“FIVE STARS! From its first page to its last, THE JUNIOR OFFICERS’ READING CLUB captivates. As I closed its final page I knew I had as much knowledge and understanding of military life as any civilian can hope for. Hennessey’s assessment is that those who have not worn uniform can never truly understand, but this book takes you close.”
