Hear the prayer's of those who recall her devoted life and who ask her to intercede for them in their necessity. (Petition) Help us to imitate her virtues during our earthly life and enjoy eternal happiness with her in Heaven. Amen. Back of Box: Born in Sicily to a wealthy and important family, Agatha lived a life devoted to God. She was quite beautiful and many men sought her hand in marriage. Agatha refused their attentions. Aware of her faith in a time of religious persecution, one suitor, who was also a judge, had Agatha brought before him and charged as a Christian. He offered to drop the charges if Agatha would deny her beliefs and give herself to him. When she did not yield to his will, Agatha was condemned to live in a brothel. There, she refused customers and rejected any advance toward her. When the judge saw that the brothel had failed to weaken Agatha's resolve, he ordered that she be tortured and sent to prison. Having her breasts cut from her chest was one of the many atrocities suffered by Agatha at the hands of her oppressors. They denied her any medical care, but God provided all the care she needed in the form of a vision of St. Peter. Through these trials, Agatha consistently stood by her faith. When she was near death, an earthquake struck and suddenly brought her torture to an immediate halt. At this, Agatha thanked God for an end to her pain and with that final prayer she died. St. Agatha's name is included in the canon of the Mass. She is the patron of breast cancer patients, those suffering from breast disease, and victims of torture. Feast Day: February 5
