Description
Elegant spikes are covered in small chocolate coloured flowers all around each stem. The rich dark green foliage has a sheen that sets these dramatic flower spikes off wonderfully. Use for border and cutting. Perennial.
The Foxglove is a plant steeped in folklore, particularly that relating to fairies and witches. Indeed, the very sight of it and its reputation as a highly poisonous plant creates a feeling that this is a rather magical plant. Its large velvety green leaves and its tall spires of bell-shaped flowers coloured in shades of pink to purple make it a very statuesque plant - it grows to a height of about 90cm.
Although all parts of the plant are toxic, it has a use in modern medicine for heart conditions, being the plant from which digitalin is extracted for treating heart disease.
Proponents of companion gardening claim that the Foxglove improves the strength of nearby plants and encourages pest and disease resistance amongst them. Potatoes, apples and tomatoes will store better if Foxgloves have been grown near them, apparently.
Plant out in shade or partial shade. Ideal for wooded areas.
At least 30 seeds with instructions included.
