Description

Purpose Native habitat restoration Riparian planting

Short-lived native shrub to 5m. Grows anywhere including geothermal areas, wetlands, dunes and dry hillsides. Ultimately overtaken by native forest, fulfilling its role as a colonising plant

Fine seed dispersed by wind. Relies on full sunlight for germination and seedling development. Woody roots make it drought tolerant but intolerant of excessive root disturbance (will die if dug out of the ground) Care is required when pricking out and potting on.

Once established withstands hard frost. Seedlings can still die from a series of heavy frosts that kill growing tips. Avoid by germinating seeds indoors between may - october

Tolerant of wet, dry, acidic, and alkaline soils. Does best in neutral PH soil which maximises nutrient availability and growth

Tolerates coastal conditions though extreme and persistent wind shear can result in contorted shapes, and low rates of flowering

Expect 60-70cm growth first year. Requires releasing for first 2-3 years after planting out. 45cm yearly increases are average for first 10 years

Seeds may be refrigerated up to12 months until ready to be sown
