2011 was a significant year for the sport of Rugby Union. It was the 7th occasion when teams met in various stadiums to vie for the honour of being the best team in the world.
New Zealand hosted the tournament, and managed to secure the trophy, beating France in the final by the narrowest of margins, 8-7.
It was the largest sporting event ever held in New Zealand, eclipsing the 1987 Rugby World Cup, 1990 Commonwealth Games, 1992 Cricket World Cup and the 2003 America's Cup.
