Original Designer: Gerrit Rietveld | 1918
Dimensions: 1.090 high x 715 wide x 900 deep.
With its subtle play of horizontal and vertical lines this chair became a manifesto for the Dutch De Stijl movement. Rietveld aimed for simplicity in construction. The pieces of wood that comprise the Red Blue Chair are in the standard lumber sizes readily available at the time, so that all the parts for its frame fit together overlapping rather than using joints.
The primary colours of the design in tribute to Mondrian’s painting, with its red, blue, yellow and then black for the frame, mark out all the different parts each one with specific functions.
Although this chair is a copy it would be fair to mention that Rietveld only ever produced one or two of these chairs i.e. the unpainted prototype of 1918 and later the 1923 Mondrian style using primary colours. With the exception of Cassina who holds the rights to produce the Red Blue Chair there are a few copies out there, some better than others!
This chair has been around for quite some time and has acquired a few dings and scratches along the way, we are selling as is. This is the only time we have ever come across a Red Blue Chair even the copies are quite rare!
