This is a medal of Saint Kateria Tekakwitha, fondly known as the Lily of the Mohawks. Kateri (1656-1680) is the first Native North American saint and she is the patron of people who love nature, work in ecology, and preserve the natural and human environments. She spent her short life partly in what is now the State of New York and partly in Canada.

Kateri took a vow of perpetual chastity in 1679, an unusually bold gesture given the social conditions prevailing for Indian women at that time - the first North American Indian to do so. Her health was poor and she died at the age of 24. Her last words at the moment of her death were “Jesus, I love you.”

Made in nickle and lead free pewter.

Size: 2.5cm tall including top loop.
