This is a beautiful, genuine fossil ammonite.

Species: Mamites Age: 75 million years Period: Cretaceous Location: Morocco.

This specimen is unusually large for the species (14 cm x 11cm x 5cm), and shows lovely suture lines.

Ammonites were marine cephalopods, related to the modern Nautilus. They were squid like creatures in curled hollow shells. There were many hundreds of species of ammonite, all of which became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, along with the dinosaurs.
