Paul graduated from the Auckland Institute of Technology in 1971 with the NZ Certificate of Graphic Arts. For the following decade he was in demand as Art Director and Illustrator to many of the leading Advertising Agencies of the day eventually starting his own freelance design business. He traveled UK and Europe in 1982 and worked with the renowned British Illustrator Tony Meeuwissen, and was influenced by the great Masters works in Europe and the Modern British School of Painting. On his return to New Zealand he specialized solely in illustration and was invited to tutor and lecture classes on illustrative art at the AIT.
