Description
LIMITED EDITION “KAI WARRA WARRA SAWMILL (1810 – 1865) FRAMED PRINT
This auction is for a Framed Limited Edition Print by Samuel Charles Brees (1810 - 1865) which was reproduced by courtesy of the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand
Several Maori & European men with axes resting by sawn logs in the foreground.
A sawmill building on lower ground in the middle distance in a bush clearing. To the right, a bullock cart with large logs loaded
This mill is situated on a tributary of the Kaiwarra-warra, & upon a section belonging to Captain Daniell. ... The works were completed in the month of October 1842 ... It consists of a water wheel placed athwart the stream, which works several circular saws, & the water is dammed up above ..."
Brees must be considered as more than a topographical artist of town & bush, for some of his views, such as the “Hutt Road Taken at the Gorge, Looking Towards Wellington”, or his “Kai Warra Warra Saw Mill” have considerable artistic merit; but the real value of his work lies in its unique historical interest
For Brees has given us an accurate pictorial record of the colonists of his day, their dwellings, farms, & clearings, as well as glimpses of the customs of the Maoris, their pas, habitations, canoes, & dress
