Stoptide: Poems by Elizabeth Isichei by Elizabeth Isichei
ISBN: 9781877338649 PUBLISHER: Steele Roberts & Associates Ltd FORMAT: Paperback PAGES: 88 PUBLICATION DATE: 1.06.2005 DIMENSIONS: 210mmX150mm
DESCRIPTION: ELIZABETH ISICHEI is professor of religious studies at the University of Otago, and is known internationally for her many books on African history and religion. The most recent, The Religious Traditions of Africa, was published in the U.S. in late 2004 by Praeger. A first book of poetry at the age of 66 is unusual. Yet Elizabeth published her first poem in Landfall in 1958; from 1958 until she left New Zealand for Oxford in late 1962, she published extensively in Landfall, the Listener, Comment, NZ Poetry Yearbook and elsewhere. She taught in African universities from 1969 to 1985, and wrote no more poetry until the late 'nineties, although she did collect and translate a large body of African oral poetry. Much of the poetry in Stoptide first appeared in a wide range of New Zealand periodicals, including the Listener, JAAM, Sport, Takahe, Glottis, Spin and Poetry NZ as well as the recent Dunedin anthology Under Flagstaff. After her retirement, Elizabeth plans to concentrate on creative writing.
