Description: This video, directed by Laurence Boulting, presents the work of Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chilida. Central to this film is Chilida's passion for exploring the sculptural properties of different materials, and he is shown preparing works in iron and a series of pieces cut from heavy clay blocks. His own commentary provides a defined statement of his artistic aims and philosophy. Beginning as a student of architecture, Chilida turned to sculpture but had little success before he exhibited at the Milan Triennale of 1954. A series of international commissions and awards followed, and he became associated with such artists as Chagall, Braque and Calder. His background in architecture is evident in his attention to the setting of his sculptures, which often derive their forms from ancient Mesoamerican and Egyptian buildings and unadorned walls of fortifications.
