Biography, Rare early NZ history, Drawing on John Hobbs' journals Williment illuminates the life of modest but enterprising & courageous man, whose achievements during the early era of Methodist mission in New Zealand and Tonga have not been fully reconised. Arrived NZ 1820's to work on Wesleyan mission station Whangaroa. Following its destruction by stragglers from Hongi Hika's war party 1827, successfully spearheaded re-establishment of the mission in the Hokianga. Hiss considerable energy, many practical skills, ability to communicate his beliefs to the Maoris & Tongans won him many converts. Influential in the signing of the Treaty Of Waitangi & in containing hostilities between European settlers and Hone Heke, printer, linguist, translator, composer, medical man, builder, navigator, explorer, horticulturist, musician and above all a missionary Hobbs made a unique contribution to the church he loved, John Hobbs is an important addition to the history of the events and lives of the many people who were part of the early mission stations in South Pacific. illustrated
