From the late 1800's this rural region on the slopes above New Plymouth and below Mt Taranaki has been home to NZ's first Premier, Harry Atkinson, whose home was spared during the land wars of the 1860's; timber, oil,farming, dairy factories and strong communities have called the Hurworth district home.
