Concluding a critical phase in the New Zealand wars, the battle of Omarunui was both short and tragic. Fought between Pakeha militia and their Maori allies and Pai Marire movement followers inside the river bank pa fourteen kilometres inland from Napier.

This is a complete history of the Battle of Omarunui which took place 14 kilometres inland from Napier on 12 October 1866. Part of the 'New Zealand Wars' there is little previously recorded about this battle. Battersby presents a coherent account and "vivid portrayal" of the conflict.
