Description
This is the first volume of the memoirs of Sir John Marshall, a New Zealand statesman who served his country in Parliament from election in 1946 to retirement in 1976. In it he recounts his life from childhood up to the year 1960, when the National Party under Keith Holyoake returned to govern after defeating Labour under Walter Nash. He describes early days in Wellington, his education at Whangarei and Dunedin, his qualifying in law at Victoria University, and his Army service in the Pacific and Italy, but the emphasis of the book is, naturally, on his life in the political arena during the postwar years of the 1940s and 1950s, an era of national reconstruction and reform . . . The closing pages of this book show the National Party poised to confront the challenge of the 1960s. Its readers will look forward with impatience to the publication of its sequel.”
