Description
CENTURY OF CHAMPIONS, Mark Taylor (2002)
Horse racing has been an integral part of both New Zealand and Australian society for many years; the first official race in Australia being held in 1810 and in New Zealand 30 years later. This book pays tribute to 100 of the greatest horses bred, trained and raced. A selection of the 100 best horses bred, trained and raced in Australia and New Zealand will always be subject to discussion, but few could disagree with the inclusion of Phar Lap, Wakeful, Gloaming, Might and Power, Desert Gold, Ajax and Bonecrusher. Of the hundred, only 25 have been selected from the pre-1950s and none from pre-1900. The horses featured in the book are presented in chronological order of their first major win. An essay on their career is accompanied by information on the dam and sire, plus a summary of their major wins, trainer(s) and total prize money won. Each horse has a double-page spread, with a photograph.
