Description
This is the truth about one of the most controversial exploits of World War II - the astounding story of the highly secret Operation Jericho, the mass prison escape in northern France that culminated in D-Day victory.
Four months before the Normandy landings the Gestapo captured several members of the French resistance who knew when and where the landings would take place.
The Allied high command could not risk them revealing this secret under torture.
Instead, British Mosquito aircraft attacked Amiens prison where the men were held: bombing from tree-top height, they shattered the prison walls.
The result: the largest jail break in history. Some 700 prisoners escaped, not just resistance members but thieves, forgers, pimps, prostitutes and murderers.
All were hunted by the Gestapo, the SS and the German army - as well as the Allied spy network that had to spirit the right people to safety.
And The Walls Came Tumbling Down by Jack Fishman is a first edition published by Souvenir Press, London, in 1982.
It is a huge 448-page 14.5x22.5cm hard cover with a good dust cover and is in great tight, sound condition with end-page maps and many photographs.
There are some very light age spots.
