This remarkable volume is a tribute to a painter of unusual and distinctive genius.

Raymond Ching is already known to a wide public for his book illustrations.

And his highly individual style of bird portraiture is represented in museums and private collections throughout the world. He is now recognised as one of the leading wildlife artists of the 20th century.

This book contains 24 plates selected from the finest of the paintings in water-based media completed between 1969 and 1975.

The subjects are taken both from the South Pacific, including Ching's birthplace in New Zealand, and from his adopted home in England.

Ching's formidable technical abilities are evident throughout, but also apparent are his growing mastery of finer details of posture and plumage and his ability to capture the personality of the living bird.

The authors, MF Soper, David W Snow, and Alec H Ghisholm, are all leading ornithologists. They have contributed the texts for the colour plates.

The introduction by Peter Hansard includes 31 black-and-white illustrations, demonstrating other aspects of Ching's work, from pencil studies and field sketches to full-scale paintings in oils.

These illustrations, together with the text, provide an invaluable insight into Ching's method of painting, and into his highly personal approach to bird portraiture.

Raymond Ching: The Bird Paintings - Water Colours and Pencil Drawings / 1969-1972 is a 1984 edition published by William Collins Sons and Company, London. The text is by David Snow, AH Chisholm and MF Soper.

It is a quality large-format 143-page 23.5x34cm gloss pictorial card soft cover in excellent condition expect for very minor scuff marks to the top front cover edge including a tiny 2mm tear and a very, very slight curl to the front edges.

The incredible artwork could easily be individually mounted if necessary.
