During his tenure at the London Evening Standard from 1927 to 1949, Low was called the "most celebrated cartoonist of the age" and produced some 3500 cartoons. Of them, 160 appear in this volume and are commented on by art historian Schoff, administrator of Adelaide's Art Gallery of South Australia. In addition, British university professor of government Seymour-Ure analyzes Low's memorable characters, including Colonel Blimp and Joan Bull, his symbols, techniques, attitudes, influence and impact. The authors had access to the artist's many letters, sketchbooks, photos, notebooks and 17 scrapbooks of press clippings, which add to the text's authority.
